Passion is a powerful engine that drives us toward our goals and dreams. When it is directed toward the well-being of others, it transforms into a meaningful purpose. As a 22-year-old woman in Mexico, my aspiration to specialize in general surgery is deeply rooted in the desire to serve others and make a difference in their lives. Currently, I am conducting a year of research to deepen my understanding of the field and enhance my skills as I prepare for my future in surgery. My family background, through which I have been involved for ten years with the association Amigo-Tez, supporting children from low-income communities in Mexico, has greatly shaped my perspective on medicine and medical practice.
A Legacy of Service
I come from a family that has dedicated its life to serving others. Since I was young, I have witnessed the impact we can have on people’s lives. Seeing how our work has improved the health, education, and well-being of children has taught me the true meaning of empathy and compassion. This family environment has been fundamental in shaping my character and has solidified my desire to pursue a career in medicine.
Discovering My Passion for Surgery
During my year of medical internship at the Mexican Social Security Institute, I had the opportunity to discover my passion for surgery. Working alongside several surgeons, I learned not only the technical skills required but also the importance of patient care before, during, and after surgery. Each experience in the operating room reinforced my commitment to this specialty, as I witnessed firsthand the profound impact that surgical interventions can have on patients’ lives. One day, while listening to a podcast by Jay Shetty at home, I heard a phrase that resonated deeply with me: “Your passion becomes purpose when you use it to help others.” This idea has become a mantra in my life and has reinforced my commitment to surgery as a form of community service.
The Importance of Serving Others
The essence of medicine lies in service. Every patient has a story, a family, and a future that can be affected by our work. As I learn and practice surgery, I strive to understand each patient as a unique individual. I am a firm believer that service and empathy are crucial for maintaining focus and the human aspect of a career in medicine, which is demanding in many ways. Throughout my journey, I have learned that by prioritizing the needs of others, I not only contribute to their well-being but also keep my own motivation alive. The challenges we face as medical professionals can often feel overwhelming, but when we approach our work with compassion and a genuine desire to help, we can navigate these obstacles while preserving our humanity.
Challenging Gender Stereotypes and Looking Towards the Future
As a woman in the field of surgery, I am aware of the challenges this path entails. However, my focus is on the importance of diversity in medicine. By aspiring to become a general surgeon, I seek not only to open doors for myself but also for other women who wish to follow this path. As I approach the application stage for the general surgery specialty, I feel a mix of excitement and responsibility. I am eager to learn, grow, and contribute to the field of surgery in Mexico.
