We Are Sorry, But You Did Not Match Any Position. What’s Next? A Perspective From An IMG.

By Gabriela Alvarez Pérez, MD

The words “ We are sorry, but you did not match any position ” were not what I anticipated reading in March. I had envisioned relocating and embarking on my residency journey in the United States. However, life has a way of redirecting our paths. Faced with the unexpected, I had to reassess my next steps.

Thankfully, I have a network of supportive physicians who have consistently championed my professional growth. Sharing the disappointing news was difficult, but their unwavering encouragement provided solace during those challenging days. After taking time to reflect on my experience and set new goals, I resolved to start afresh. This time, I am better prepared and more determined than ever.

Self-compassion has been essential throughout this process. I’ve learned to combat self-loathing and lean on the support of loved ones. I actively sought guidance from my mentors, seeking advice on strengthening my application. Hearing from those who have successfully navigated this path, especially in competitive specialties, has been invaluable. Remember, if you find yourself in a similar situation, be patient. Answers may not come immediately, but they will come.

I’ve also discovered the significance of networking- ‘Your network is your net worth’-. After reaching out to a physician in my community, she generously offered me two invaluable opportunities. As an IMG, cultivating connections and finding mentors can be challenging, but I’ve made significant strides in recent months, learning from others and paying forward the support I’ve received.

Above all, I’m prioritizing self-care. The residency application process is demanding, especially for international medical graduates. Remember, you are not alone. Seek out mentors, rely on your support system, embrace opportunities, and take care of your mental and physical well-being.

If you share my experience, please don’t lose faith in yourself.  Life’s journey isn’t always a straight line. It twists and turns. You are where you are supposed to be, and I wholeheartedly believe everything happens for a reason. As someone told me, ‘I know you are going to do amazing things, just not on the timeline you wanted.’ So, the words now are “One more time”.

Big dreams need a balance of ambition and practicality. Embrace your setbacks as learning experiences on your path to success. Adapt and persevere through challenges, breaking down your goals into manageable steps. With determination and self-belief, you can turn aspirations into reality.

If you’re reading this, and you’re an IMG, I want you to know that as I continue to pursue my own goals, I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.

Sincerely,

Gabriela, your fellow Match 2025 applicant
